Will I get really hot sleeping on a memory foam mattress

Will I get really hot sleeping on a memory foam mattress?

Everyone seems to ask the question: Will I get really hot sleeping on a memory foam mattress?  This might be the main factor which deters people from purchasing a memory foam mattress, so here are the facts which you should take into account.

Getting hot and sweaty at night

If you sleep on a regular mattress and tend to get hot under the covers at night, a memory foam mattress might make things worse for you.  Memory foam mattresses are not as breathable as coil mattresses and the truth is that you might get hot sleeping at night if you already have a problem sleeping on your coil mattress.
It is recommended that you sleep in a cool environment at night.  My suggestion is anywhere from 17C-22C.  Your body rests better in these temperatures.  Try turning the temperature down on your air conditioner, or cracking your bedroom window open at night.  Getting fresh cool air at night is very important to get a good rest and this will definitely help you sleep better and prevent you from having night sweats and getting hot.

Your bed sheets and covers also play a huge role in your sleep.  Try switching to a thinner more breathable bed sheet during the hot summer months.

Regular Visco Memory Foam Mattresses

These are your basic memory foam mattresses.  They are not infused with “cool gel” or “cool beads”.  If you tend not to get hot at night on your regular mattress, and sleep in a cooler environment, you should not have problems getting hot and sweaty at night with a regular memory foam mattress.  I sleep on a regular memory foam mattress and I do not have any problems as long as my room is nice and cool during the night.

Gel Infused and Gel Bead Memory Foam Mattresses

Studies show that gel infused memory foam stays cooler than regular memory foam.  The difference is not extremely drastic, but it does make a difference in your sleep.  There is no real way to figure out exactly how much gel is infused in the mattress or how many beads are in the memory foam so if you are skeptical, buy from a trusted brand and make sure there is a comfort guarantee that allows you to exchange your mattress within a certain period of time.  At least you are protected and can exchange your mattress if you still feel you are getting too hot at night.

Convoluted Foam

Convoluted foam looks like an upside-down egg carton with ridges that create extra channels of air flow throughout the mattress.  This definitely makes the mattress more breathable, but still not to the same extent as a coil mattress.  Think about it: The space between the layers of foam will never be as great as in a coil mattress, and they tend to get compressed together anyways when you sleep on the mattress.  Although this is a great feature to have to further increase the breath-ability of the mattress, it is not a perfect solution to fix the problem.

Final Thought

Memory foam mattresses are by far the most comfortable, best pressure relieving beds out there.  In my opinion, the benefits far outweigh the concerns of getting too hot at night if you know how to overcome this problem.  Sleep at a cool temperature at night, and get proper breathable bed sheets to prevent you from getting night sweats.  If you want to further assure a cool night’s sleep go for a gel infused memory foam from a trusted brand and the majority of them include convoluted foam anyways.

At last, make sure the trusted retailer you are purchasing your memory foam mattress from offers a comfort guarantee.  In the worst case scenario you can exchange your mattress for something else if you still have problems getting too hot.  I hope this clears things up for everyone and I wish everyone the best night sleep!

Mattress Sales – Don’t get tricked!

Why is it that mattresses are always on sale? If you think about it, wherever and whenever you go shopping for a mattress, there is always a super promotion going on that gives you 50% off this and 60% off that.  You shouldn't get tricked into thinking you got a good deal, just because you bought your new mattress on sale.  There are smarter ways to shop and I am going to list a few methods to ensure that you don’t get ripped off!

Compare Product not Price

Just because a retailer says that the mattress you are looking at retails for over $2000 and it is on sale for $800, doesn't mean you are necessarily getting a good deal.  Realistically, nobody would buy that mattress for $2000 ever.  This jacked up price is only used to trick the consumer into thinking they are getting a better deal.

You should compare the mattress with other mattresses of similar coil count, interior materials (memory foam, latex, bio foam etc.) and overall quality of the product.  You will be surprised to see that one mattress on sale 65%off $2399 for $839 can have the sale coil count, same memory foam in the euro top, and even be the exact same make and model at one retailer, as another retailer selling it for $699 at their everyday regular price.

This happens all the time between retailers as consumers are not aware of the tricks played to sucker them into buying something they think they got an unbelievable deal on.

At National Mattress Outlet we never inflate prices and then put in fake deals to trick our customers.  We compare our pricing to the average listed price of many of the big box retailers (not inflated regular prices on sale but regular prices not on sale) and then slash that price by a couple hundred dollars to bring you the most value for your money.

With our unique business model encompassing low overhead, no commissions, and bulk orders we are able to offer unbeatable prices on all of our products without promoting deceiving “sales”.  In fact, we only put a mattress on sale if it is discontinued or if we have an abundance of inventory.  We do his because our everyday prices are already substantially lower than our competitors.

If you are in the market for a new mattress, don’t get tricked into sale prices thinking you are getting a deal.  Instead, compare specifications and final price you are paying.  As an informed consumer, you will scope out a better deal and get a better quality product if you understand how mattress pricing works.

Consumer Information on “Coil Count” in a Mattress.

The first thing many people ask when choosing a new mattress is, “How many coils are inside this mattress?”  Although coil count is a fair determination on the quality and support a mattress offers, it is not an overall statistic that one should base their opinion on when selecting a new mattress.  There are many factors involved in “coil count” which should be looked at as a whole.  Here is a list of the most important ones:

Coil Count

-          The coil count written on the description of the mattress tells you the number of springs or coils inside the mattress.  This number can range from 200 in a twin size mattress to over 1000 in higher quality king size mattresses.  The same mattress model will have different coil counts for their twin, full, queen, and king sizes because the larger the size, the more coils are required to provide the same level of support over the surface area.  The specification sheet found in many showrooms usually illustrates the coil count for a queen size mattress, as this is the most popular mattress size.

Quantity and Quality

-          More coils typically indicate better support and a better built mattress as your body is spread over more “support areas”.  It’s like building a house with more support columns.  The more columns, the sturdier the house, and the longer life span it will have.  However, the “gauge” of the coil is equally important as this indicates the thickness of the metal wire used to make the coil.  A mattress made with a thicker gauge coil and fewer coils can offer the same if not better quality and support as a mattress made with more but thinner gauge coils.  Always compare the gauge of the coils and the number of coils when choosing your new mattress.

Coil Types

-          Many mattresses are made with interlocked coils, or continuous coils, which support each other and work together to distribute body weight over the surface of the mattress.  These types of coil offer a firm support but can also transfer motion to your partner if not accompanied with the right amount of upholstery and comfort material such as foam, memory foam, and quilted panel.

-          Other mattresses are made with individual or pocket coils, which work independently, supporting the areas on which pressure is applied.  These types of mattresses create a softer feel and highly reduce the amount of motion transfer a partner will feel while sleeping on the other side of the bed.

Conclusion

-          It is always best to lie down on the mattress to see how it feels.  Coil count, gauge, and type of coils range from manufacturer to manufacturer.   The way the coil is twisted, and the amount of twists can also affect the feel of the mattress from manufacturer to manufacturer.  Look at the specification, but also lie down and feel it for yourself.  One manufacturers 800 continuous coil can feel a lot different based on the specifications listed above, than another manufacturer’s 800 continuous coil.  Also, make sure information is available on the coils in the mattress and don’t just take the salesperson’s word for it.  They can always get confused with the many different models available, or just take advantage of inexperienced consumers.  Whatever the case may be, at least now you know a little bit more about “coil count” and can make a more informed decision on your new mattress purchase.

Consumer Beware! - Memory Foam Mattresses

It seems evident that memory foam mattresses are becoming more popular among consumers than ever before.  Its almost as if a memory foam craze has swept the market, and retailers and manufacturers are taking great advantage filling this demand with hundreds if not thousands of different products.

What amazes me, is the lack of consumer knowledge when it comes to memory foam mattresses.  The average consumer hears about the general advantages of sleeping on a memory foam bed and then hits the market comparing prices, thickness, and comfort.  Meanwhile there are many factors one should consider when purchasing a memory foam mattress.

Here are a couple tips I have come up with (having moderate manufacturing experience of memory foam mattresses), that will help consumers make a better, more informed, decision when purchasing a memory foam mattress.

Thickness/Components - Many consumers look at the thickness of a memory foam mattress when deciding on their purchase.  Typically, memory foam mattresses range from 8-12 inches thick or even more on some models.  The thickness alone does not say anything about what is actually inside the mattress.  Consumers should ask for details on the elements the mattress is composed of, including the various layers of foam which make up the mattress.  Ask for a schematic provided my the manufacturer to be exactly sure of what is inside your mattress.

Example:  Two mattresses, one being 8" thick and one being 12" thick, could both be comprised of the same amount of memory foam only have different core block thicknesses, which gives the illusion of a better bed but in reality makes no different to quality or comfort.

Quality of Foam - Another very important factor to consider when purchasing a memory foam mattress is the quality of foam, or the grade of the foam, it is composed of.  Memory foam is graded by its weight or poundage.  Typically any good quality memory foam mattress will be composed of a memory foam 4 lbs or higher.  The support foam is graded by its density and anything 1850 or higher is recommended for longevity.     Do your research, look for reviews about the mattress, and read the specifications before you buy.  Many manufacturers do not disclose the quality and grades of foam they use for anti-copying purposes, so it is recommended to buy from a brand-name company with a reputation of selling high quality products.  Stay away from cheap no-name brands!

Example:  A cheap memory foam mattress could be made with 2 lb memory foam and a 1530 grade support foam.  It will feel comfortable at first and will probably have an attractive price tag.  However, within a year the foams will start to degrade and create a "sag" in your mattress.  This will be very uncomfortable to sleep on and your mattress will begin to feel more like a hammock as it ages  Higher grade foam obviously costs a lot more but will last you far longer compared to lower grade foams.

There are many more factors to consider when buying a memory foam mattress.  This blog could turn into a book very fast if I was to go on about every single aspect of a memory foam mattresses you should know about.  Overall, the thickness/components and quality of foam are one of the more important things to looks at when choosing your new memory foam mattress.  Try to look for reputable brand names which disclose a lot of information about their products are are priced accordingly with their quality. Also, buy from a trusted mattress store which specializes in mattresses, and has knowledgeable staff to help choose a mattress that is best suited for your needs.

There are many good memory foam mattresses out there, as well as many bad ones.  In the end, an informed consumer is more likely to make a good choice, and purchase a mattress in which they will sleep in comfort for many years to come!
